Lorsqu&#039;une tension directe est appliqu\u00e9e \u00e0 la diode (de l&#039;anode \u00e0 la cathode), elle laisse passer le courant. Si la tension est invers\u00e9e, la diode bloque le courant, emp\u00eachant sa circulation. Contrairement aux diodes ordinaires, qui laissent simplement passer ou bloquent le courant, les DEL convertissent directement l&#039;\u00e9nergie \u00e9lectrique en \u00e9nergie lumineuse par un processus appel\u00e9 \u00e9lectroluminescence. La couleur de la lumi\u00e8re \u00e9mise d\u00e9pend du mat\u00e9riau semi-conducteur utilis\u00e9 dans la LED.
